What is a phone speaker cleaner?
A phone speaker cleaner is a tuned audio file that makes your speaker vibrate on purpose. Low frequencies move the speaker diaphragm through its widest travel, and that movement pushes water droplets and loose dust out through the grille holes they came in through. It is the same principle as the water eject shortcut on a smartwatch, running in your browser instead.
Nothing goes into your phone. No liquid, no pin, no cotton bud, no disassembly. The sound your speaker already makes every day is doing the cleaning, just at a frequency and volume chosen to shift debris rather than play music.

Is it safe for my speaker?
Yes. The tones sit inside the normal working range of a phone speaker, so the driver never does anything it does not already do when you watch a video at full volume. What we do not recommend is running cycle after cycle for ten minutes straight. Three cycles, a short break, then stop and reassess.
How to get water out of a phone speaker
Water is the most common reason a speaker suddenly sounds like it is playing from inside a bag. A splash, a rainy walk or a sweaty gym session leaves droplets sitting on the diaphragm, and water is heavy enough to stop the membrane moving freely.
Move fast and the fix is usually complete. The routine below is what we use in the workshop before anything else gets touched.
- Take the case off and dry the outside of the phone with a cloth.
- Set volume to 100% and hold the phone with the speaker pointing at the floor.
- Run the Water Eject cycle all the way through and tap the back gently as it plays.
- Wipe away the beads that appear on the grille, they are the water leaving.
- Wait five minutes in a dry, airy spot, then run a second cycle.
- Leave the phone off the charger until you are sure it is dry inside.
Skip the rice, skip the hair dryer
Rice does almost nothing for sealed modern phones and leaves starch dust in the ports. Hot air from a dryer can warp adhesive and push moisture deeper into the phone. Airflow at room temperature plus sound is both faster and safer.
How to clean dust out of a phone speaker
Dry debris behaves differently from water. Lint packs into the mesh over months and muffles the top end first, so voices lose clarity before anything sounds obviously broken. A higher, faster buzz works better here than a deep bass pulse.
- Switch the tool to Dust Shake and set volume to maximum.
- Hold the phone speaker-down so the loosened dust falls away from the grille.
- Run a full cycle, tapping the back of the phone every few seconds.
- Brush the grille with a soft dry toothbrush, moving along the slot rather than into it.
- Run a second cycle, then test with a spoken word podcast, which exposes muffling faster than music.

Why a 165 Hz tone moves water and a 3 kHz tone does not
A speaker makes sound by moving a membrane back and forth. How far that membrane travels depends on frequency: low notes mean big, slow excursions, high notes mean tiny, fast ones. Water droplets are heavy compared with the membrane, so only the big low frequency movements carry enough force to break the surface tension holding a droplet in place.
That is why the Water Eject tone sits near 165 Hz, low enough for real movement and high enough that a small phone driver can still reproduce it loudly. Dust is lighter and stickier, so a faster buzz with more cycles per second shakes it free more effectively than a deep pulse.

How do I use a phone speaker cleaner?
Set the volume to 100%, hold the phone with the speaker facing down, choose Water Eject for moisture or Dust Shake for dust, then press start and let the full cycle play. Tap the back of the phone gently while it runs, wipe the grille afterwards and repeat two or three times if the sound is still dull.
Is a sound based speaker cleaner safe for my phone?
Yes. The tones stay inside the frequency and volume range your speaker already handles when you play music or watch video. Nothing is inserted into the device and nothing is opened, so there is no risk of scratched mesh or a voided warranty. Avoid running cycles back to back for more than a few minutes, the same way you would not leave a phone at full volume all day.
Will it remove water that is already inside the phone?
It clears water sitting in the speaker cavity and grille, which is where muffled sound comes from. Water that has reached the logic board is a different problem and needs a repair shop. If your phone shows a liquid detected warning, keep it off the charger and read our water damage guide first.
How many cycles should I run?
Two or three, with a short pause between them. Most of the improvement shows up in the first cycle. If three cycles plus a brush leave the sound unchanged, more cycles will not help and the speaker likely has a physical fault.
Does the tool work on iPhone and Android?

Can this make my speaker louder?

Will cleaning cycles damage my hearing?
The tones are loud by design, so do not hold the speaker against your ear while a cycle runs. Set it down, let it play, and keep it away from babies and pets, who find the frequency unpleasant.
Does it work on a wet charging port or microphone?
Only indirectly. Vibration can shift a droplet out of a nearby port, but the tone is aimed at the speaker cavity. For a wet port, leave the phone unplugged, speaker down, in moving air for a couple of hours.
