Deep speaker cleaner for grilles that stayed dull after a normal clean

A deep clean is a routine, not a louder button. Follow the order below and you get the most out of the long cycle without cooking the driver.

Rule out the fakes

Case cutouts, protector adhesive, a flat battery saver mode and equaliser presets all mimic a blocked grille. Clear them before you escalate.

Pass one, straight down

Full 60 seconds, volume at maximum, grille aimed at a dry towel. Gravity plus a wide sweep does the bulk of the work.

Rest five minutes

Loosened water needs somewhere to go and the voice coil needs a breather. Skipping the gap is the most common mistake here.

Pass two, tilted

Angle the device about 45 degrees. Debris that was wedged against one wall of the cavity now has a clear route out.

Brush, then pass three

A dry soft brush along the slot lifts the lint the sweep has already unstuck, then the last pass carries it clear.

Stop and reassess

Three passes is the ceiling for one session. If the sound is identical, the answer is a repair bench, not a fourth cycle.

No marketing, just numbers

What "deep" actually means on this page

Plenty of sites call something a deep clean because it sounds stronger. Here it means four specific changes to the cycle, and you can see all of them on the tool above.

  • Longer pass: 60 seconds instead of the usual 45, so the sweep spends more time on every frequency it crosses.
  • Wider band: 90 Hz to 520 Hz rather than 100 Hz to 480 Hz, adding both deeper excursion at the bottom and sharper shake at the top.
  • Lower start point: the sweep begins at 140 Hz, under the usual starting tone, because heavy droplets respond to the biggest, slowest cone movements.
  • Multi pass structure: three runs with rest gaps and a position change between them, which is what actually shifts debris that a single pass only rattled.

That last point is the one people underestimate. A blockage is rarely a uniform plug. It is usually lint compacted on one side of the mesh with a droplet behind it, so hitting it from one angle at one volume tends to move it a little and then stall. Change the angle, let the water drain, sweep again.

Deeper is not unlimited

Three passes, then stop for the day. A phone driver at full volume for minutes on end gets warm, and a warm voice coil is a less accurate voice coil. Nothing here damages a healthy speaker, but there is no prize for running the cycle twelve times in a row either.

The same goes for volume: 100% is the target, not 100% held against a hard surface that turns the whole phone into a resonator. Rest it on a towel.

By the time you reach pass two, the easy debris is already out. What remains is either wet, wedged or genuinely stuck, and each of those responds to something different.

  1. Wet and stubborn: stay in Water Eject and keep the grille pointing down the whole minute.
  2. Dry and packed: switch to Dust Shake, which trades cone travel for cycles per second.
  3. No idea which: use Deep Sweep and drag the slider slowly by hand across the band while it plays.
  4. Feel the device as it runs. The frequency doing the most work is the one you can feel buzzing in your fingertips.
  5. Wipe the grille between passes so the debris you shifted does not get drawn back in.

When a deep clean is the right call

Worth escalating

  • A standard cycle helped a bit, then plateaued. Partial improvement almost always means a partial blockage, and partial blockages move with more passes.
  • The speaker has been muffled for months rather than hours, which points to compacted lint instead of a fresh splash.
  • The device lives in a pocket, a gym bag, a building site or a beach bag and the grille looks grey when you shine a light across it.
  • You can hear the volume drop at the top end only: voices go woolly while bass still thumps. That is classic mesh loading.
  • Water went in more than a day ago and the phone has been sitting in a drawer since, so any droplet left inside has settled.

Not worth escalating

  • The speaker produces no sound at all. Silence is a circuit or driver problem, and no frequency clears that. Start with the speaker not working checklist instead.
  • It crackles or rattles at volume but is fine when quiet. That is usually a torn diaphragm or a loose component, covered in our distortion guide.
  • The problem only shows up during calls, in which case the earpiece is the culprit and the call speaker cleaner is the tuned tool for it.
  • The phone took a serious soaking and shows a liquid detected alert. Get it dry and off the charger before you worry about audio quality.

How to judge the result fairly

Do not compare from memory. Before pass one, record ten seconds of a podcast playing through the speaker using a second device, then record the same clip after pass three. Played back to back, a real improvement is obvious and a placebo is equally obvious.

If three passes changed nothing measurable, a repair shop will usually quote in the range of a typical screen repair to swap a speaker module, and many will clean a grille properly on the bench for much less. Ask for the clean before the replacement.

The questions that come up once someone has already tried a normal cycle.

What makes this different from the standard speaker cleaner?

Four things: the pass runs for 60 seconds instead of 45, the sweep covers 90 Hz to 520 Hz instead of 100 Hz to 480 Hz, the tone starts lower at 140 Hz, and the routine is built around three passes with rest gaps and a position change. The waveform is not more aggressive, there is simply more of it and it covers more ground.

Should I start here or with the normal cleaner?

Start with the normal cleaner if the problem is fresh, for example a splash an hour ago. Come here when that cycle either did nothing or helped and then stalled. Running the long cycle first is not harmful, it is just a slower route to the same answer.

How many deep passes can I run in one day?

Three in a session, and up to two sessions a day with a few hours between them. Beyond that you are heating a voice coil for no benefit. Debris that survived six long passes is not going to surrender to a seventh.

Why do the rest gaps matter so much?

Two reasons. Water that the sweep has broken free needs a minute or two to actually drain out of the grille under gravity, and a driver that has been at full excursion for a minute is warm, which slightly changes how it responds. Five minutes solves both.

Is the wider 90 Hz to 520 Hz range safe for small speakers?

Yes. Both ends of that band are well inside what a phone or laptop driver reproduces every day. A very small driver simply will not play 90 Hz loudly, so it produces less output rather than straining. If you are cleaning earbuds, use the higher band on the AirPods page instead, because tiny drivers respond better up there.

Can a deep clean fix a speaker that sounds fine at low volume and bad when loud?

Usually not. That pattern points at a mechanical fault in the driver, most often a damaged diaphragm, and vibration cannot repair a tear. One deep pass is worth trying to rule out debris rattling in the cavity, but do not run the full routine three times hoping it changes.

Do I need to tilt the device, or is that just theatre?

It is genuinely useful. Speaker cavities are small boxes with corners, and compacted lint tends to sit against one face. Changing the angle changes which face the pressure wave pushes the debris toward, which is often the difference between a blockage moving and a blockage vibrating in place.

My phone is water resistant, so why is there water in the speaker at all?

Water resistance ratings describe the sealed interior, not the speaker cavity. The grille is deliberately open to the outside so sound can escape, so droplets get in there on any device, IP rated or not. That cavity is exactly what a cleaning cycle clears.

Will three passes at full volume damage the speaker?

No. Full volume playback for three minutes across a quarter of an hour is ordinary use for a speaker designed to play films and calls. The reason we cap the routine is diminishing returns and heat, not risk of destruction.

Nothing worked. What do I actually do next?

Take a before and after recording to be sure, then get the grille inspected. A technician can look under the mesh with a loupe, which no amount of sound can do. If the mesh is clear and the speaker still sounds wrong, you are looking at a module replacement, typically a modest repair rather than a new phone.
