MacBook speakers fire upward through two long grilles either side of the keys, which makes them a landing zone for dust, crumbs and hair. Bigger drivers than a phone means a lower tone, a longer cycle and a bit of brushing.
Two minutes of sound, then two minutes of brushing
A MacBook is the one device where sound alone rarely finishes the job, and it is worth understanding why before you start. On a phone you point the grille at the floor and gravity carries the debris away. A MacBook speaker fires upward, so anything the tone lifts falls straight back into the same slot unless you remove it.
So the routine is a pair: a low frequency cycle to break the dust loose and lift it to the surface, then a dry brush and a cloth to take it off the machine entirely. Run the cycle on the left panel for general dust, or the crumb shake beside this text for the drier, grittier stuff that gets into a keyboard.

How to clean MacBook speakers properly
In this order. Skipping the output check wastes the other five steps more often than you would think.
Flat desk, lid open
Never clean a MacBook on a duvet or a cushion. Soft surfaces block airflow and hold the dust you just lifted.
Check the output device
Option click the menu bar volume icon and select MacBook Speakers so nothing is being routed elsewhere.
Volume to maximum
System volume up, app volume up, alert volume up. A quiet tone cannot shift compacted dust.
One 50 second cycle
Longer than a phone cycle because the sound path from driver to grille is longer on a laptop.
Brush and wipe
Along the slot, never pressing down into it. Then lift the debris away with a dry cloth so it cannot fall back in.
Test each channel alone
Use the balance slider in Sound settings to isolate left, then right. That is the honest test of whether you fixed it.
Where MacBook speakers actually sit
On every current MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, the speakers fire upward through the two long perforated strips running either side of the keyboard. That placement is great for sound, because it aims audio at your face rather than at the desk, and it is terrible for cleanliness, because everything that falls off your fingers lands directly on the driver's only exit.
Some models take a less obvious route. On several Air generations and older Pro designs, the driver sits under the keyboard deck and vents through the perforations, which means dust can accumulate in the channel rather than on the mesh itself. On those machines you may lift a cloud of dust from an area slightly away from where you expected.
The 14 and 16 inch Pro six speaker array
The larger MacBook Pro has a six speaker system: four woofers arranged as two force cancelling pairs, plus two tweeters. The force cancelling design means the two woofers in each pair move in opposite directions, so the chassis stays still while the air moves. That is why a 16 inch Pro can produce real bass without buzzing the whole laptop across the desk.
For cleaning, the practical consequence is that a low tone will feel less like a vibration in your palm than it does on a phone, even though the drivers are moving plenty. Do not read the absence of buzz as the absence of movement, and do not crank the frequency up hunting for a rattle.
- Both grilles dull: often software. Check output device, balance and any audio plugin before you touch a brush.
- One grille dull: physical. Dust, a crumb or a blocked section of the slot on that side.
- Crackle at high volume only: could be debris on the diaphragm, or the speaker being pushed too hard. Drop the volume and see whether it stays.
- Buzzing that changes with pitch: something loose resting on the mesh, or a case or stand resonating with the chassis.
A dull top end with fine detail missing is the classic signature of a dust film across the mesh. Lost volume overall is more often a settings problem. If you are not sure which you have, run through the speaker damage test, which works the same way on a laptop as on a phone.
The four things that block a MacBook grille
Recognising the culprit tells you whether to reach for the tone, the brush or a service appointment.
Crumbs and biscuit dust
Eating over a keyboard puts debris directly above an upfiring driver. Crumbs are heavy, so they sit in the slot and usually come out with a cycle plus a brush.
Airborne dust and hair
A laptop that lives open on a desk builds a grey film across the mesh within a year. Pet hair and long human hair tangle in the perforations and need lifting with a brush, not just vibration.
Pocket and bag fluff
Carrying a MacBook in a bag with a fabric lining leaves a fine layer of lint that packs into the corners of the slot where your cloth never reaches.
Spilled liquid
The one case where you stop. Liquid on a MacBook keyboard reaches far more than the speaker, and a cleaning tone is the wrong tool entirely. Power down and get it looked at.
macOS sound settings that mimic a blocked speaker
Output device
Open System Settings, then Sound, and look at the output list. If a HomePod, an Apple TV, a monitor with built in speakers or a pair of AirPods is selected, your Mac's own grilles are silent by design. The fastest check is to hold Option and click the volume icon in the menu bar, which shows the full device list in one click. A Mac that connects to an external display over USB C or Thunderbolt will often switch output silently the moment you plug in.
The balance slider
Still in Sound settings, the balance slider sits under the output device. A slider nudged even a third of the way to one side makes that channel sound broken. It is worth deliberately moving it fully left, then fully right, as a channel isolation test: play a podcast, listen to each side alone and you will hear immediately whether one grille is genuinely quieter or whether both are fine.
Audio MIDI Setup for a finer check
For a more precise look, open Audio MIDI Setup from the Utilities folder, select the built in output and look at the per channel volume sliders on the Output tab. Those sit underneath the simple balance control and occasionally end up unbalanced after an app has been messing with the audio device. Set both to the same value and reset the balance slider to centre before you conclude anything about dust.
A spill is a service matter, not a cleaning matter
If you have poured anything onto a MacBook keyboard, do not run a cleaning cycle and do not carry on using it. Shut it down, unplug the power, do not open it up and do not try to dry it with heat. Liquid travels along the keyboard deck into the logic board area, and the speaker sounding muffled is the least of the problems.

Software that colours the sound
Video conferencing apps, audio routing utilities and system wide equalisers all install virtual audio devices, and those can survive long after the app is deleted. If the output list contains devices you do not recognise, that is worth investigating. The same goes for an equaliser preset in your music app: a heavy bass cut leaves speech sounding thin in a way that is very easy to mistake for a blocked grille.

Is it safe to play a cleaning tone through MacBook speakers?
Yes. The 70 Hz to 400 Hz band sits well inside what those drivers reproduce when you watch a film, and MacBook audio has protective limiting built in. Nothing is inserted and nothing is opened, so there is no warranty question. Two or three cycles per session is plenty.
Why do I need to brush as well on a laptop?
Because MacBook speakers fire upward. Gravity works against you: dust the tone lifts out of the mesh settles straight back down into the same slot. Brushing along the grille and wiping with a dry cloth is what actually removes it from the machine.
Should the lid be open or closed?
Open, at a normal working angle, with the laptop flat on a hard surface. A closed lid presses the display against the keyboard deck and traps everything you are trying to shift, and a soft surface underneath blocks the vents.
Only my left MacBook speaker sounds quiet. What should I check first?
The balance slider in System Settings, then Sound. Move it fully to one side, then the other, and listen to each channel alone. If both sides sound equally good when isolated, it is a settings issue. If the left really is quieter, clean that grille and run a second cycle.
Can I use compressed air on a MacBook grille?
Apple advises against aerosol sprays on its products, and we agree for speakers specifically. Point blank air forces dust past the mesh where no brush can reach it, and the propellant can leave residue. A dry brush is slower and much better.
I spilled coffee on my keyboard and now the speakers sound wrong.
Stop using it and do not run a cleaning cycle. Shut down, unplug and take it to a repair centre. Liquid on a keyboard deck spreads well beyond the speakers, and running audio through a wet driver can make the damage permanent.
My MacBook Pro speakers sound quieter than when it was new. Is that dust?
Possibly, but check three things first: the output device, whether any app has its own volume turned down, and whether an equaliser or audio plugin is active. A grey film of dust across the mesh usually removes detail and treble rather than overall loudness.
Does this work on an iMac or a Mac mini with external speakers?
On an iMac, yes, run the lowest part of the sweep and brush the grille along the bottom edge. External powered speakers are a different case: they have much larger drivers, and physical cleaning plus checking the cable is usually more productive than a tone.
How often should I clean the grilles?
A brush and a wipe once a month if the Mac lives open on a desk, or every couple of months if it mostly travels in a case. A cleaning cycle every few months is enough unless you eat over the keyboard, in which case make it a habit.
Nothing improved after three cycles. Now what?
That is a useful result. A blockage responds at least a little to sound plus brushing, so an unchanged speaker usually points to a hardware fault or a software configuration you have not spotted. Try a different user account to rule out software, then book a Genius Bar appointment.
Clear the dust out of those grilles
One low frequency cycle, a dry brush along each slot and a wipe. Most Macs sound noticeably clearer afterwards.
