Which speaker is actually letting you down?

Phones have at least two speakers and they fail in different ways. Match your symptom to the column before you clean anything.

Calls dull, music fine

Classic blocked earpiece. The receiver mesh is loaded with wax or oil, or a protector is sitting over the slit. This page is the right one.

Music dull, calls fine

The bottom loudspeaker is blocked instead. Pocket lint and water collect there, and the frequency that shifts them is much lower.

The proximity sensor beside the earpiece is covered or dirty, which is not an audio fault at all. Clean the glass above the screen.

Not your hardware. Signal quality, their microphone or a codec mismatch. Test with three different people before you clean.

Why an earpiece needs a different frequency

A receiver is a fraction of the size of a loudspeaker driver, so a deep water eject pulse barely moves it. Push the band up and it starts working.

Speaker size and useful cleaning frequency are linked. A big driver moves a long way slowly, which is what breaks water loose. A tiny receiver cannot make that stroke at all, so it converts low frequency signal into almost nothing. Ask it for 150 Hz and you get silence and a warm coil.

Move up into the hundreds of hertz and the same driver becomes efficient. That is why this page starts at 320 Hz and lets you sweep as high as 900 Hz, and why the second cleaner beside this text runs higher still for stubborn cases.

You will hear less from the earpiece than you are used to from the loudspeaker even at full volume, and that is normal. It is built to be heard from two centimetres away, not across a room.

The real culprit

Wax and skin oil, not pocket fluff

Here is the thing almost nobody tells you: the earpiece clogs faster than the bottom speaker on most phones, and it happens for a reason that has nothing to do with dust. Every call presses that mesh against the side of your head. Ear wax, sebum, sweat, sunscreen, foundation and moisturiser all transfer onto it, and unlike lint they do not fall out again.

Oil is the problem within the problem. Dry fluff sits on top of a mesh and can be shaken loose. An oily film wets the mesh, then catches passing dust and holds it, so the blockage builds in layers and becomes progressively more solid. That is why a receiver can go from fine to unusable in a few months while the loudspeaker across the same period only gets slightly quieter.

  • It builds where you hold the phone. Look closely and the film is often heavier on one end of the slit than the other.
  • It gets worse in summer. More sweat and more sunscreen, plus warmer oil that flows further into the mesh.
  • It affects speech before anything else. Consonants live in the frequencies a loaded mesh damps first.
  • It is the reason brushing matters here. On a loudspeaker a brush is optional. On an earpiece it does at least half the work.

The dry brush technique

  1. Use a genuinely dry, genuinely soft brush: a clean toothbrush, a soft makeup brush or a photography lens brush.
  2. Hold the phone screen down so anything you loosen falls away rather than in.
  3. Sweep along the slit from one end to the other, in one direction, with almost no pressure.
  4. Wipe the bristles on a cloth after every few passes, otherwise you are redistributing the same film.
  5. Do not add water, alcohol, contact cleaner or breath. Damp plus mesh plus proximity sensor is a bad combination.

Do not hold the phone to your ear during a cycle

This is the one rule that matters more on this page than any other. The cleaning tone plays at maximum volume, and the earpiece is engineered to sit right against your ear canal. Those two facts together are genuinely unpleasant and unnecessary.

Put the phone down, start the cycle, stay at arm's length, then test with a real call afterwards. Keep it away from babies, pets and anyone wearing hearing aids while it runs.

Rule out the screen protector

Adhesive over the earpiece slit is the single most common cause of muffled calls on a phone that is otherwise clean. Check the cut out lines up.

Light it from the side

A torch held at a shallow angle across the slit shows a waxy film that looks invisible head on. This is your before picture.

Brush dry, along the slit

Soft brush, no pressure, one direction, phone screen down. Wipe the bristles between passes so the film leaves rather than moves.

Run the 40 second cycle

Phone flat on a towel, screen facing down, full volume, and your ears well away from it. Dust Shake is the right mode here.

Test on a real call

Ring someone and ask directly whether you sound normal, and judge how they sound to you. Calls are the only true test of a receiver.

One repeat, then stop

Brush and run a second cycle if it improved partly. If two rounds changed nothing, the fault is more likely to be the module than the mesh.

When it is not dirt

Signs the receiver module itself is failing

Earpieces do die, and on some handsets the receiver shares a flex assembly with the proximity sensor and the front camera, which is why a hardware fault sometimes arrives with odd companions. These are the patterns that point at hardware rather than blockage.

  • Volume is normal, quality is not. A blocked mesh makes calls quieter and duller together. Full volume with a crackle or a buzz suggests a damaged diaphragm.
  • It cuts in and out as you move the phone. That is usually a flex cable or connector, often after a drop.
  • It died suddenly and completely. Blockages build gradually. An instant total loss is electrical.
  • The screen also misbehaves during calls. If the proximity sensor stopped working at the same time, suspect the shared assembly.
  • It arrived right after a software update. Then it may not be hardware at all. Restart first, and check call audio settings and any Bluetooth device still paired.

Before booking a repair, eliminate the software side properly. A stray Bluetooth earpiece in a drawer that is still paired will happily steal your call audio, and an accessibility balance slider left off centre makes one channel sound dead. If you do end up at a repair shop, ask for the receiver to be cleaned and inspected before it is replaced. It is a small part and the labour to reach it is modest, so quotes are typically well below a screen repair. A clean receiver sounds obvious

A successful earpiece clean is one of the most noticeable fixes in this whole toolkit, because speech is the only thing that driver ever plays and speech is what a loaded mesh ruins first. People routinely describe it as the caller stepping out of another room.

If two rounds of brushing and cycles produce nothing at all, that is a genuine answer too. Stop, and spend your time on the hardware question instead.

Call speaker and earpiece questions

Why do callers sound underwater while music sounds fine?

Because two different speakers are involved. Music and video play through the loudspeaker on the bottom edge, while a call held to your ear plays through the receiver behind the slit at the top of the screen. If only one of the two sounds wrong, only one of the two is blocked, and the earpiece is by far the more likely of the pair.

Why does the earpiece clog faster than the bottom speaker?

Contact with your face. Ear wax, skin oil, sweat, sunscreen and makeup transfer onto the mesh every call, and that oily film both wets the mesh and traps passing dust. Pocket lint on a loudspeaker sits loose and can be shaken out, whereas an oil and wax layer bonds itself in place and builds up over months.

Can a screen protector muffle call audio?

Very easily, and it is the first thing to check. Cheap or universal protectors often cover part of the earpiece slit, and even a well cut one can creep as the adhesive relaxes. Lift the top edge a millimetre and make a test call. If clarity jumps back, no cleaning cycle was ever needed.

Should I hold the phone to my ear during the cleaning cycle?

Absolutely not. The tone plays at maximum volume and the earpiece is designed to deliver sound directly into your ear canal at close range. Set the phone down screen first, start the cycle, keep your distance until it finishes, then test with an actual call.

Is it safe to brush the earpiece mesh?

Yes, if the brush is soft and completely dry and you sweep along the slit rather than pressing into it. A clean toothbrush or a soft makeup brush is ideal. What is not safe is a pin, a needle, a staple or a SIM tool, all of which puncture the protective mesh and let debris reach the driver permanently.

Can I use alcohol or a cleaning solution on the earpiece?

No liquid, including alcohol wipes. The proximity sensor, the front camera assembly and the display adhesive all sit within a few millimetres of that slit, and liquid wicks along mesh very effectively. Dry brushing plus vibration achieves the same result without the risk.

My screen turns off during calls. Is that the same problem?

No, that is the proximity sensor next to the earpiece deciding your face is against the glass. A smudge, a thick protector or a case lip over the sensor will trigger it. Clean the glass strip above the screen with a dry microfibre cloth, and if you have a protector, confirm its sensor cut out lines up.

How many cycles should I run on an earpiece?

Two rounds, each one a brush followed by a 40 second cycle, with a real call in between to judge progress. The receiver is a small driver and there is no benefit in hammering it repeatedly. If two rounds do nothing, the answer is not a third round.

Water got into the earpiece. Do I use the water mode?

You can, but keep expectations realistic. The cavity behind a receiver is tiny and holds very little water, so it usually clears in minutes if you simply hold the phone with that edge pointing down in moving air. Run one water cycle, leave it to dry, and avoid any heat source.

Does this work on a Fold with two earpieces?

Yes, and you should test both. Foldables can route calls through different receivers depending on whether the device is open or closed, so a caller may sound clear in one configuration and muffled in the other. Clean and test each position separately.

How much does an earpiece repair usually cost?

It varies by model and country, but the receiver is a small inexpensive component and it sits reasonably accessibly on most phones, so quotes typically land well below a screen replacement. Ask the shop to clean and inspect it before replacing it, since a technician with a loupe can see what no cleaning tone can reach.
