Your iPhone has two speakers and they clog for different reasons. Pick the one that sounds wrong, hold the phone grille down, and let a tuned tone walk the trapped water or pocket lint back out the way it came in.
Two speakers, two very different blockages
Since the iPhone 7, Apple has used a stereo pair made of unequal parts. The loud one lives along the bottom edge, sharing that strip with the charging port, whether that is Lightning on older models or USB-C on the 15 and later. The quiet one is the earpiece above the display, which doubles as the second stereo channel when you watch anything in landscape.
That arrangement matters when you are diagnosing a problem, because each grille collects a different kind of dirt.
- Bottom grille: sits in your pocket facing the seam, so it takes on lint, sand and denim fibre. It is also the lowest point of the phone, so splashes and rain drain into it.
- Earpiece slit: spends its life against the side of your face, so it collects skin oil, makeup and ear wax, which pack into the mesh in a much stickier way than fluff.
- Both at once: unusual unless the phone got properly wet, in which case the earpiece usually clears faster because it holds far less water.
If only callers sound bad while music and videos are fine, the loudspeaker is innocent and you want the earpiece tuned cleaner instead. The reverse pattern, films sounding boxy while calls are crisp, points squarely at the bottom grille and the cleaner at the top of this page.

Playing audio through your own speaker is ordinary use of the device. Nothing is opened, nothing is inserted, no software is installed and no setting is changed at a system level. A sound based clean voids nothing, which is more than can be said for prying at a grille with a metal tool.
Apple support staff will still ask what you have tried, so it is worth mentioning the cleaning cycles. It tells them the blockage has already been ruled out.
Clean the iPhone earpiece with a higher band
Smaller driver, smaller stroke. The earpiece responds to a tone well above the one that shifts water out of the bottom grille.
The receiver behind that thin slit is a fraction of the size of the bottom driver, so asking it to reproduce a deep 140 Hz pulse mostly produces silence. Move up into the hundreds of hertz and it starts moving properly.
- Check the screen protector first. Adhesive creeping over the earpiece slit is the single most common fake blockage on an iPhone.
- Turn the phone so the slit faces down and slightly away from you, on a clean surface.
- Run the Dust Shake cycle above, not the low water tone.
- Brush the slit along its length afterwards with a dry soft toothbrush, in one direction only.
- Do not hold the phone against your ear while any cycle plays. Set it down, let it finish, then test with a real call.
Put the SIM tool down
The SIM ejector pin, a needle, a staple or a toothpick will all reach the mesh, and that is the problem. iPhone grilles have a fine fabric or metal screen behind the visible holes, and a single puncture there turns a cleanable blockage into a permanent open path for dust. Sharp metal in the charging port is worse still.
Compressed air held at the grille is the other trap. At point blank range it drives lint through the mesh rather than off it.
Water in an iPhone speaker, handled in order
IP68 means water resistant, not water proof, and the rating covers the sealed interior rather than the speaker cavity. The grille is open by design, so a splash goes straight in.
Unplug and stay unplugged
If iOS shows the Liquid Detected alert for the charging port, do not override it and do not use a cable. Wireless charging is the safer option while things dry.
Dry the outside properly
Case off, phone wiped down with a lint free cloth, including the bottom edge and the seam around the screen. Loose surface water gets pulled back in otherwise.
Tap it speaker down
Apple's advice is a firm tap against the palm with the speaker facing the floor. Do a few before you even start the tone, and you may see droplets appear straight away.
Run the water cycle
Full volume, grille down, one complete pass. The low pulse is doing what a smartwatch water eject does, just from a browser tab.
Air, not heat
Leave the phone upright in moving room temperature air for at least half an hour. No hair dryer, no radiator, no rice, all three of which cause their own problems.
Second pass, then judge
Run one more cycle after the rest. Audio that is still dull after that is worth escalating rather than repeating.

A surprising number of muffled iPhones are perfectly clean. iOS has several settings that reduce or reroute output, and each one produces a symptom that feels like debris.

The balance slider is the sneaky one. It is easy to nudge while scrolling accessibility settings, and once it sits off centre the phone genuinely plays one channel louder. Drag it back to the middle before you run a single cleaning cycle, otherwise you will be chasing dirt that is not there.
Worth knowing too: iPhones reduce speaker output when the phone is very hot or the battery is critically low, and a Focus mode can silence alerts entirely. A quick sanity check
Record a voice memo, then play it back through the speaker. If the recording is clear but the playback is dull, the speaker side is at fault. If the recording itself is muffled, your microphone is blocked instead, which is a different grille and a different fix.

Is there an official Apple water eject feature on iPhone?
Not as a built in button, no. Apple Watch has Water Lock with an eject function, and iPhone has the Liquid Detected alert, but there is no Apple menu item that plays an ejection tone on an iPhone. Apple's own guidance is to tap the phone gently with the speaker facing down and leave it in dry air. This page automates the sound part of that.
My iPhone is IP68 rated. How did water get in the speaker?
The rating describes the sealed body, tested in still fresh water under lab conditions, and it gets weaker as the adhesive ages. The speaker cavity behind the grille is deliberately open to the air, because sound has to escape somewhere. So water sits in that cavity on any phone, and the muffled sound you hear comes from the droplet resting on the driver rather than from damage inside.
Can I use a SIM tool or a pin to poke the grille?
Please do not. There is a fine mesh behind the visible holes that keeps dust and water off the driver, and a metal point tears it in a way that cannot be undone. Once that screen is broken, debris reaches the diaphragm directly and the speaker gets progressively worse. A dry soft brush along the outside of the grille is the only physical contact worth making.
Does running cleaning cycles affect my AppleCare cover?
No. You are playing audio at a volume your iPhone produces every day, which is exactly what the speaker is designed for. Nothing is disassembled and no unauthorised software is involved, so there is nothing for Apple to object to. Sticking a tool into the port or grille is the thing that leaves visible marks a technician will notice.
Should I clean the bottom speaker or the earpiece?
Follow the symptom. If films, music and speakerphone all sound boxy, clean the bottom grille with the main tool on this page. If the phone only disappoints during normal calls held to your ear, the earpiece is blocked and the higher frequency cleaner further up the page is the right one.
The Liquid Detected alert keeps appearing. Will this clear it?
Indirectly at best. That alert monitors the charging port, not the speaker, so the cleaning tone is aimed at the wrong cavity to dismiss it. Leave the phone unplugged, port facing down, in moving air for a few hours. Ignoring the alert and charging anyway is how connector pins corrode.
Which mode should I pick for pocket lint?
Dust Shake. Dry fibre is light but clingy, so it responds to many small fast movements rather than a few large slow ones. Run a cycle, brush the grille along its length, then run a second cycle to carry out whatever the brush loosened.
Will this make my iPhone speaker louder than stock?

Is it safe on an older iPhone with a worn battery?
Yes, though plug considerations apply. Sustained full volume playback draws more current, so if the battery health is low the phone may throttle output or shut down. Keep the phone above roughly 30% charge, or on wireless power if the port is dry, and the cycle will play normally.
How do I know it actually worked?
