Why this exists

It started with people poking pins into speaker grilles

We work with audio: recording, measurement, the unglamorous business of working out why one speaker sounds different from another. Somewhere along the way we noticed a pattern in the questions friends and family brought us. A phone gets rained on, a laptop lives in a dusty bag, a pair of earbuds spends a summer in a gym pocket, and the sound goes dull. The advice they had found online was almost always worse than the problem: a safety pin, a cotton bud soaked in alcohol, a can of compressed air pressed flat against the mesh, a bowl of rice.

Every one of those can turn a blocked grille into a torn membrane. Meanwhile the speaker itself is a device built to vibrate, and vibration is exactly what moves a water droplet or a plug of lint back out the way it came. Smartwatches have shipped a water eject tone for years. There was no reason that had to be locked inside one company's hardware.

So we built it as a web page instead. Then people started asking for versions tuned to their specific device, because a MacBook driver and an AirPod driver are not remotely the same thing, and the library grew from there. Today SonicSweep is a set of cleaners for specific devices plus a blog of guides we actually want our own families to read.

What we do

How the tool works, in three sentences

Your browser generates a tuned low frequency tone and plays it through the speaker you want cleaned. That tone drives the speaker diaphragm through its widest travel, which breaks the surface tension holding water in place and shakes dry lint loose from the mesh. Gravity and a few gentle taps do the rest, so the debris leaves through the holes it entered.

That is the whole mechanism. Nothing is inserted into your device, nothing is opened, no liquid is involved, and the audio never leaves your browser. The deep clean mode simply runs a longer sweep across a wider band for blockages that survived a standard cycle.

These are not mission statement decorations. They are the reasons the site looks and behaves the way it does.

Honest about limits

The tool clears blockages. It cannot repair a blown driver, a failed amplifier or a corroded connector, and we say so on every page.

No scare tactics

We will never dress up a muffled speaker as an emergency to get a click. Most cases are lint, and lint is a one minute fix.

Tuned per device

Driver size changes which frequency actually moves the membrane, so each device page starts in the band that suits it.

Free means free

Every mode on every page, with no trial, no watermark, no locked deep clean and no email wall in front of it.

Safe methods only

No pins, no needles, no alcohol, no water, no compressed air at point blank range. If a method can tear mesh, it is not in our guides.

Private by design

No accounts, no logins, no microphone access, no uploads. There is nothing for us to collect, so we do not.

How we test

Frequencies chosen for driver size, checked on real devices

Picking a cleaning tone is not guesswork, but it is not one number either. A phone bottom speaker, a laptop woofer, a tablet array and an earbud driver differ in size by an order of magnitude, and the frequency that produces the largest useful excursion moves with them. Big drivers respond lower. Tiny drivers need a higher band and far less level before they start distorting rather than moving air.

  • Start from the driver. We set each page's default frequency near the band where that class of speaker moves most air without audible strain.
  • Listen on hardware, not just a scope. Every tone gets checked on a spread of real devices we have on hand, across current and several year old models.
  • Watch for distortion, not just loudness. If a tone makes a small speaker rattle or clip instead of pumping cleanly, it is the wrong tone, however impressive it sounds.
  • Keep cycles short. Cycle lengths are set so a full run is long enough to work and short enough that nobody is tempted to leave a speaker screaming for ten minutes.
  • Re-check when something changes. New browser audio behaviour or a new device layout means the affected pages get another pass.

We are deliberately not going to claim a laboratory, a standards body or a certification we do not have. This is careful, repeatable listening on a range of devices, plus the physics of how a diaphragm moves. It is enough to choose a good frequency, and we would rather describe it accurately than inflate it. You can hear the result for yourself on the speaker sound test before and after a cycle.

Where we stop

If a speaker sounds no different after three cycles and a soft brush, the problem is very probably not a blockage. That is the point where our guides tell you to stop running tones and get the device looked at. More sound will not fix hardware, and we are not going to pretend otherwise to keep you on the page.

What SonicSweep will never do

A short list, because the things a site refuses to do tell you more than its features page.

  • No app. There is nothing to install. A speaker cleaner does not need a permanent place on your phone.
  • No account. No sign up, no login, no newsletter gate. The tool runs the moment the page loads.
  • No data collection. We do not ask for your name, your email or your device identity to use the tool, and we never request microphone access. See the privacy policy for the detail.
  • No scare tactics. No countdown timers, no fake damage warnings, no "your device is at risk" banners.
  • No affiliate pressure. When a guide mentions a soft brush or a microfibre cloth, it is because that is the right tool, not because a link pays us to say it.
  • No fake numbers. No invented user counts, no awards we did not win, no invented experts on the byline.

Every guide says clearly when the answer is a repair shop

The blog exists because a cleaning tone is only ever part of the answer. A crackle at high volume, one channel quieter than the other, sound that cuts out when the case flexes: these are different faults with different fixes, and some of them are not fixes you can do at home.

So we hold every guide to the same test before it goes live.

  1. It names the safe method first, and names the unsafe shortcuts explicitly so you can recognise the bad advice elsewhere.
  2. It gives you a way to tell whether the problem is a blockage or hardware, usually in under two minutes.
  3. It states plainly where the do it yourself route ends and a repair shop begins, including the rough cost of being wrong.
  4. It separates what we have verified from what is general guidance, and it does not pad either with filler.
  5. It gets corrected when a reader shows us we were wrong. Corrections are edits to the guide, not quiet deletions.

If you spot something inaccurate, we genuinely want to hear about it. The fastest route is the contact page, and a specific note beats a general complaint every time.

How this is paid for

A small number of ads, placed away from the tool

Hosting, testing devices and the hours that go into the guides all cost something, and we would rather be upfront about how that is covered than leave you guessing. SonicSweep is funded by a small number of advertising slots, kept away from the cleaner itself so an ad never sits where your next tap is going.

What that means in practice: the tool is not the bait for a paid version, because there is no paid version. Nothing about your device is sold. No guide is written to order, and we do not accept sponsored posts dressed up as advice. If that model ever changes, it will be written on this page before it is anywhere else.

If an ad slot is ever broken, intrusive or landing on top of the controls, tell us and we will move it. A cleaner you cannot press start on is worth nothing to anybody.

Who is behind SonicSweep?

A small, audio focused team rather than a single named founder. We are not going to invent a photogenic origin story: the useful thing to know is that the frequencies are chosen by people who test speakers for a living, and that our email goes to a human who reads it.

Is SonicSweep really free?

Yes. Every cleaner, every mode and every sound test, with no trial period, no account and no locked features. A small number of ads placed away from the tool keeps the lights on.

Do you collect any data about my device?

No. The tool needs no permissions, no sign in and no microphone access, and audio is generated in your browser rather than uploaded. The privacy policy explains exactly what the hosting provider logs.

Can you fix my speaker for me?

We are not a repair service and we cannot diagnose hardware remotely. What we can do is tell you honestly whether what you are describing sounds like a blockage worth another cleaning cycle or a fault that needs a technician.

Will you add a cleaner for my device?

Often, yes. Device requests are the single most common message we get, and they are how most of the current pages came to exist. Send the exact model and where the speaker sits on it.
