Phone speaker sound test: hear exactly what is wrong
This is a diagnostic, not a cleaner. Play a controlled test tone through your speaker, run the four checks below, then read your symptom off the table to find out whether you are dealing with a blocked grille, a damaged driver or a software setting.
How to run the speaker test
Work through these in order, and notice where the sound stops behaving.
1. Sweep for gaps
Run sweep mode at 50% volume. The level should rise and fall smoothly as the frequency climbs. A sudden dropout or a dead band is a real finding.
2. Channel by channel
Hold a 440 Hz tone, cover the bottom speaker with a finger and listen to the earpiece alone, then swap. Note any difference in level.
3. Bass rattle
Drop the slider to 60 to 90 Hz at low volume and hold the phone still. Any buzz, fizz or ticking is something vibrating that should not be.
4. Volume ladder
Play the same tone at 25%, 50% and 100%. Distortion only at the top is different from distortion at every level.
Left, right and the finger test
Almost every modern phone is stereo: a main driver on the bottom edge and the earpiece near the top as the second channel. They are not identical and are not meant to be. The bottom speaker carries most of the loudness, the earpiece is smaller and thinner by design. You are checking whether the gap between them is reasonable or dramatic.
You do not need a stereo test file. Hold a steady 440 Hz tone, press a fingertip firmly over one speaker, and listen to what remains. Swap. If one side almost vanishes, you have found the problem speaker.
- Both similar: balance is fine, judge overall clarity instead.
- Earpiece much weaker: blockage or a balance setting, and it hits calls hardest.
- Bottom speaker weaker: usually lint or water in the main grille.
- One side silent: check the accessibility balance slider before blaming hardware.
Keep it off your ear
Test tones are steady and loud, which makes them harder on hearing than music at the same volume. Hold the phone at arm's length during the 100% pass and keep the session short.

Three of those rows get confused with each other constantly, so here is how to separate them.
Blocked grille, blown driver or software?
These three produce similar complaints and need completely different responses.
Blocked grille
Gradual onset, dull rather than harsh, top end goes first. Volume still responds, and it improves a little after each cleaning cycle.
Blown or torn driver
Buzzing or fizzing that scales with volume and never improves. Often sudden. Cleaning will not touch it.
Software or settings

Why 25, 50 and 100 percent tell different stories
Testing at one volume is the most common mistake. Each level exposes a different class of fault.

Speaker test questions
Is a test tone safe for my speaker?
Yes at sensible volumes and lengths. A sustained tone at 100% for several minutes asks more of a small driver than music does, so keep the full volume pass to a few seconds.
What frequency range should a phone speaker cover?
Usefully, roughly 200 Hz to well above 10 kHz. Below about 150 Hz output falls away fast because the driver is tiny, so a weak 60 Hz tone is physics, not a fault.
Why does the tone sound louder at some frequencies?
Every speaker and enclosure has peaks and dips, and small phone enclosures have obvious ones. Smooth variation across the sweep is normal. A sudden dropout or a buzzing band is not.
Can this test tell me if my speaker is blown?
It gives you strong evidence. Buzzing that scales with volume, on every frequency, and survives a cleaning cycle is the classic damaged driver signature. Only a technician can confirm it.
My speaker distorts at maximum volume. Is it broken?
Probably not. Most phones apply a limiter near the top and some hardening is expected. Worry when distortion appears at half volume, or when rattle comes with it.
Does this work on a Bluetooth speaker or headphones?
Yes, the page plays through whatever your device is using. Keep the volume low on earbuds, and prefer the phone speaker, since wireless codecs add artefacts of their own.
Should I test before or after cleaning?
Both. A test before gives you a baseline, and the same test after tells you whether the cleaning cycle achieved anything.
The test sounds fine but calls are terrible. Why?
Calls use the earpiece and a narrow voice bandwidth, and they can be ruined by network quality rather than hardware. Run the ear speaker test to check the earpiece alone.
