You hold the phone in landscape to watch something, and one side is clearly carrying more of the sound than the other. Once you have noticed it you cannot stop noticing it, and the obvious conclusion is that a speaker is on its way out.
Usually it is not. Phone stereo is lopsided by design, and on top of that there is a short list of settings and blockages that make the gap wider. This guide explains what is normal, how to test each channel honestly, and the point at which an imbalance really does mean a failing driver.
How phone stereo actually works
When a phone claims stereo speakers, it almost never means two matched drivers. It means one proper speaker at the bottom edge and the earpiece above the screen pressed into service as the second channel.
Those two parts are not remotely equal. The bottom speaker has a real enclosure behind it and fires out of a reasonably open port. The earpiece is a fraction of the size, sits in a shallow cavity and radiates through a slit no wider than a grain of rice, often partly hidden behind the display glass. It was engineered to put speech into one ear from two centimetres away, not to fill a room.
Manufacturers compensate in software by boosting the earpiece channel and steering bass to the bottom speaker, but they cannot close the gap completely. The result is real and universal:
- The earpiece channel is quieter, especially below a few hundred hertz.
- It sounds thinner and more nasal on its own, because it produces almost no bass.
- Held in landscape, the bottom speaker side feels closer and more present.
- Covering the earpiece with a finger makes less audible difference than covering the bottom grille.
So the first question is not "why are they uneven" but "are they more uneven than they were last month". A difference you have always had is almost certainly the design. A difference that appeared recently is worth chasing.
The thirty second sanity check
Take the case off, put on a mono spoken word clip at moderate volume and hold the phone in landscape. Cover one grille, then the other. If both make a clear difference, both drivers are alive and you are dealing with a settings or blockage problem, not a dead speaker.
Check the balance slider first, it takes ten seconds
An accessibility balance control nudged off centre is the most common cause of a sudden, dramatic imbalance, and it is the one people never think to check. It gets moved by accident: a stray tap while scrolling settings, a child exploring the phone, or a setup transfer that carried the value across from an old device.
- iPhone and iPad. Settings, Accessibility, Audio & Visual. Drag the Balance slider until it snaps to centre. While you are there, check that Mono Audio is off unless you want it on.
- Samsung. Settings, Accessibility, Hearing enhancements, Left and right sound balance. Same slider, same fix.
- Pixel and most other Android phones. Settings, Accessibility, Audio adjustment or Audio and on screen text, then the balance control.
- Recheck after any large system update, because a few releases have reset or misapplied the value.
Mono Audio is worth understanding rather than just switching off. It sums both channels and sends the same signal to both speakers, which is genuinely useful if you have hearing loss on one side or if one channel is blocked and you do not want to lose half the mix. It will not repair anything, but it makes a lopsided phone usable while you sort out the real cause.
Then look for something physically in the way
If the balance is centred and the gap is still obvious, the next suspects are all mechanical, and all free to deal with.
- A case covering one grille. Cases are moulded to a shape, not measured to a cutout. A lip that overhangs one grille by a millimetre is enough. Take the case off and retest before anything else.
- Debris in one grille only. Very common, because phones live in pockets in a consistent orientation, so one edge collects far more lint than the other. Look at both grilles in angled light and compare how packed the mesh looks.
- A screen protector over the earpiece slit. Only affects the earpiece channel, which is the one already at a disadvantage, so the effect is dramatic. Check whether the protector's cutout genuinely clears the slit.
- Water in one channel. Liquid rarely fills both cavities equally. One side goes dull or gurgles while the other is untouched, which is why a sudden imbalance after rain or a splash is usually moisture rather than damage.
- Adhesive or dust behind the mesh. Sometimes visible as a grey mat sitting level with the grille rather than fibres on the surface.
For a blocked channel, run the phone speaker cleaner with the affected grille pointing at the floor, then brush the mesh with a dry, soft toothbrush and run a second cycle. If the mesh looked badly packed, follow up with the deep speaker cleaner, which sweeps lower and longer to shift material the short cycle only loosened.
Never clean one grille with liquid to "match" the other
Alcohol, water and spray cleaners wick straight through the mesh into the cavity, and in the earpiece they sit millimetres from the display connector. Pins and toothpicks tear the mesh and push debris deeper. If you are tempted to even the two sides up, use a dry brush and sound, nothing else.
How to test each channel properly
Most people test with music, which is the worst possible choice. Music is mixed with instruments deliberately placed left and right, so a track genuinely can be louder on one side. You need a mono source to make a fair comparison.
- Remove the case and disconnect all Bluetooth devices.
- Find a mono source: a voice memo you record yourself is ideal, or most spoken word podcasts, which are mixed centre.
- Set media volume to about 70 percent and hold the phone in landscape.
- Cover the bottom grille with a fingertip and listen to what remains. Then uncover it and cover the earpiece instead.
- Compare the two. Expect the earpiece alone to sound quieter and thinner. Expect the bottom speaker alone to sound fuller.
- Now play a short mono tone sweep and repeat, listening for buzzing or gurgling rather than for level. The speaker sound test gives you a clean sweep to use.
- Rotate the phone and repeat. Whichever physical grille is louder should stay the same one, regardless of orientation.
That last step catches a separate problem. Phones and tablets reassign left and right when you rotate, so if the sound seems to jump sides in one app but not another, you have found a channel mapping bug in that app rather than a speaker fault. It is more noticeable on tablets, which have larger grille separation and get rotated far more often.

Earbuds are a different problem with the same symptom
If the uneven side is an earbud rather than a phone speaker, the cause is different and the fix is simpler. Wax and skin oil collect in the tiny acoustic mesh of each bud, and ears do not produce wax evenly, so one bud always clogs first. A bud that has gone quiet over a few months of daily wear is blocked, not broken.
- Pull the silicone tip off if the model has one, and rinse the tip alone in warm water, then dry it fully.
- Brush the mesh with a dry, soft brush while holding the bud mesh down so debris falls out rather than in.
- Do not use a pin on the mesh. It is the thinnest component in the whole product and it is not replaceable on most models.
- Run a cycle of the AirPods and earbud cleaner at low volume, with the buds out of your ears.
- Check for a balance setting in the earbud app as well as on the phone, since several brands have their own.
When it really is a failing driver
Genuine single channel failure does happen, and it has a recognisable signature rather than a vague quietness.
- Buzzing, rattling or a raspy edge on one side that gets worse as you raise the volume.
- Complete silence from one channel, confirmed with a mono source and both grilles tested.
- Sound on one side that cuts in and out when the phone is flexed or the case is squeezed, which points at the connector rather than the driver.
- An imbalance that arrived immediately after a drop or a soaking, and did not improve after a full day of drying.
- No change at all after two rounds of cleaning and a confirmed centred balance slider.

Final thoughts
Before you do anything else, open your accessibility settings and confirm the balance slider is dead centre. That single check resolves more sudden imbalance reports than every other cause put together, and it takes ten seconds.
If the slider is centred, take the case off, compare both grilles in good light and run a cleaning cycle on whichever side looks worse. And if the earpiece channel has simply always been the quieter one, that is the phone working as designed, not a fault waiting to happen.
