Six steps that apply to any Apple speaker

The frequency changes from device to device. The order of operations never does.

Strip the accessories

Case off, folio open, sleeve away. Half of all muffled Apple audio reports trace back to something covering a grille.

Confirm the output route

A HomePod, an Apple TV or a car kit quietly holding the audio session looks exactly like a dead speaker.

Match the band to the driver

Position for gravity

Grille down for iPhone, iPad and AirPods. Flat and lid open for a MacBook, since gravity cannot help you there.

Driver size decides the tone

The right frequency band for each Apple device

A speaker clears itself when the diaphragm travels far enough to throw a droplet or a dust particle out of the grille. Big drivers travel furthest at low frequencies. Small drivers cannot reproduce those low frequencies loudly at all, so their useful cleaning energy sits higher up. That single fact explains every row in the table below.

The spread inside Apple's range is wide. An AirPods driver is a few millimetres across, an iPhone bottom speaker is a sealed module the size of a stick of chewing gum, a 16 inch MacBook Pro has force cancelling woofers, and an iMac has a full array behind the chin of the display. One frequency cannot possibly suit all of them.

Use the sweep slider on this page to sit inside the right band, or open the dedicated page for your device and it will already be set. If you can feel a faint buzz in the chassis while the tone plays, you are in a productive range for that speaker. If you can only hear it and feel nothing, try lower.

Cycle length follows the same logic. Small drivers finish their work quickly, and larger cabinets with longer sound paths need more time for debris to travel out. Beyond about a minute, though, extra time stops helping: a second cycle after a brush does far more than one long continuous run.

Liquid and Apple hardware

Water in an iPhone or iPad speaker: what to do in the first ten minutes

iPhones from the 7 onward and recent iPads carry an ingress rating, which means a splash or a dropped phone in a sink usually survives. What the rating does not promise is clear audio, because water sitting in the speaker cavity damps the diaphragm even when the electronics are perfectly fine. That is the gap a water eject cycle closes.

  1. Dry the outside with a soft lint free cloth and take the case off.
  2. Do not plug anything in. If iOS shows a liquid detected alert on the Lightning or USB C port, leave it unplugged until the alert stops appearing.
  3. Hold the device with the speaker grille pointing at the floor.
  4. Run Water Eject at full volume for the whole cycle, tapping the back gently as it plays.
  5. Wipe the beads that appear on the grille, then wait five minutes in moving air.
  6. Run a second cycle, then leave the device speaker down overnight before judging the result.

Hair dryers, rice and heat guns all make it worse

Heat softens the adhesive that holds an iPhone display and an iPad back together, and forced hot air pushes moisture deeper rather than out. Rice leaves starch dust in the ports and does almost nothing for a sealed device. Room temperature airflow plus sound is both faster and safer.

What Apple says about cleaning, and what that means for a sound clean

Apple's published cleaning guidance is consistent across the product range and worth reading before you touch a grille. In short: use a soft, slightly damp, lint free cloth on outer surfaces, avoid abrasives, avoid aerosol sprays, bleach and hydrogen peroxide, and never let moisture get into any opening. Some products are cleared for 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipes on hard non porous outer surfaces, but openings are excluded in every case.

Every one of those rules is about putting substances into the device. A sound based clean puts nothing in at all, which is why it sits comfortably alongside the official advice rather than against it.

  • Nothing is inserted. No pin, no swab, no nozzle, no liquid enters a speaker port.
  • Nothing is opened. No screws, no adhesive, no seals disturbed, so the ingress rating is untouched.
  • Nothing unusual happens electrically. The driver plays a tone inside the range it already handles when you watch a film at full volume.
  • Nothing to disclose. Playing audio through a speaker is ordinary use, so there is no warranty consequence and nothing a technician could detect later.

Where the honest limits are

A cleaning tone moves loose debris and surface moisture. It does not repair a torn diaphragm, revive a corroded flex cable or clear a blockage that has already passed behind the mesh. If three cycles plus careful brushing change nothing at all, the useful conclusion is that this is a hardware fault, and the next step is Apple Support or an authorised service provider rather than more sound.

One more Apple specific trap: audio routing. The ecosystem is very good at handing your audio to something else, whether that is a HomePod picked up by AirPlay, a paired Mac, a car kit or a set of AirPods still in a bag. Does this work on every Apple device?

Anything with a speaker and a browser, or anything you can play audio through. iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air and Pro, iMac, Mac mini with speakers attached, AirPods and Beats. Only the frequency band and cycle length change, and the table on this page gives you both.

Will a sound clean void my Apple warranty?

No. Playing audio through a speaker is normal use of the device. Nothing is opened, inserted or modified, so there is nothing to disclose and nothing a technician could find. The activities that do carry risk are the ones Apple warns against: liquids, sprays and objects in openings.

What frequency should I use for my device?

Roughly 300 to 1200 Hz for AirPods, 150 to 400 Hz for an iPhone bottom speaker, 80 to 440 Hz for an iPad and 60 to 400 Hz for a Mac. Bigger driver, lower tone. The comparison table on this page lists every class with a suggested cycle length.

Can I clean an iMac or a Studio Display speaker?

Yes, and it is mostly a dust job rather than a water one. Run the lowest part of the sweep, then brush along the speaker grille and the vents with a dry soft brush. A desktop that has sat in one spot for two years collects a surprising amount of airborne dust.

Is it safe to use an alcohol wipe on my iPhone speaker grille?

Apple clears 70 percent isopropyl wipes for hard non porous exterior surfaces, but explicitly not for openings. A speaker grille is an opening. Keep wipes on the glass and the frame, and use a dry brush plus a cleaning cycle on the grille itself.

My iPhone speaker sounds fine for music but bad on calls. Why?

Those are two different speakers. Music plays through the bottom driver, calls use the earpiece above the screen, and the earpiece sits right where your cheek deposits makeup, sunscreen and skin oil. Use the earpiece tool and read up on why calls sound muffled while media does not.

How many cycles are sensible?

Two or three, spaced a few minutes apart, with a brush and a wipe in between. Most of the gain arrives in the first cycle. If three have changed nothing, more will not, and that is genuinely useful information about where the fault lies.

Should I clean with the case on or off?

Off, always. Thick silicone cases and iPad folios overlap the grilles, muffle the output and can stop debris leaving even when the tone is doing its job. Test again with the case on afterwards, since sometimes the case was the whole problem.

Which mode should I choose?

Water Eject for anything that has been rained on, splashed or sweated into. Dust Shake for gradual muffling, pocket lint and crumbs. Deep Sweep when you do not know, or when the first two modes only partly worked.
