The sink, the toilet, the beach, the pint glass. However your phone got wet, the next sixty minutes will decide more about its future than anything a repair shop can do afterwards.
The good news is that almost everything that helps is free and involves doing less rather than more. The bad news is that the most popular internet advice actively shortens your phone's life. Here is the order we work in, and why.
Do not plug it in
Charging is the single most damaging thing you can do to a wet phone. Current plus moisture plus dissolved minerals equals fast corrosion and, occasionally, a shorted charging board. No cable, no wireless pad, no car charger until the port is genuinely dry.
The first sixty seconds
Speed matters, but only for a small number of actions. Do these and nothing else:
- Get it out and hold it port down. Do not press any buttons while it is still underwater, because pressing a button flexes a seal and can pull water inward.
- Power it off. If it is running, hold the power combination and shut it down properly. A powered board with water bridging two contacts is how components die.
- Take the case off. Cases trap a film of water against the body and block the openings that would otherwise let it out.
- Pop the SIM or SIM and SD tray out. That leaves a drainage and ventilation path straight into the chassis, and lets you see the liquid indicator later.
- Blot, do not rub. A microfibre cloth or a paper towel pressed against each opening wicks water out. Wiping smears it across the seams.
- Leave it off. Resist the urge to check whether it still works. Every boot pushes current through a wet board.
That is the whole emergency phase. Everything else is patience.
Fresh water, salt water and sugary drinks are three different problems
Repair shops treat these as separate cases, and you should too. What the liquid leaves behind matters more than the liquid itself.

Pure water evaporates and leaves almost nothing. Salt and sugar do not. They stay on the board as a residue that draws in moisture from the air for years and quietly eats through solder joints and traces. If your phone met salt water or a sweet drink, drying it is only half a fix, and a shop with an ultrasonic cleaner is worth the money.
Rice, hair dryers and freezers: why the popular advice keeps failing
These three suggestions are everywhere, and all three are worse than doing nothing.
- Rice. It is a weak desiccant, it only affects the air immediately around the grains, and it cannot reach a sealed cavity. What it does reliably is leave starch dust and the occasional grain wedged in a charging port or speaker slot. We pull rice out of ports far more often than rice ever pulled water out of a phone.
- Hair dryers and radiators. Heat pushes moisture inward instead of out, softens the adhesive that holds your screen and seals in place, and stresses a battery that is already in a bad situation. Warm moving air seems logical and does real harm.
- Freezers. Freezing water expands it, and expanding water inside a tight assembly is how you crack things. Condensation then forms everywhere as the phone warms back up.
- Vacuums and compressed air at close range. Both drive water and debris past the speaker mesh instead of out of it.
What actually works
Boring, cheap and effective. Gravity, moving air at room temperature, and time.
- Blot every opening with a dry cloth: charging port, speaker slots, microphone holes, SIM tray, headphone jack if you still have one.
- Stand the phone port down against something, or lay it on a folded towel with the charging port at the low end. Let gravity work in your favour for the whole drying period.
- Add gentle airflow. A fan on low across the phone, or an open window, does more than any sealed container of anything. Room temperature only.
- Use silica gel if you happen to have it. The sachets from shoe boxes, camera bags and vitamin bottles genuinely absorb moisture. Put the phone and a handful of sachets in a sealed bag or box. This is the one container trick worth doing.
- Reposition it every few hours so different openings face down and trapped droplets get a new route out.
- Wait 24 hours, and 48 if it was fully submerged. Nothing about this step can be shortened by wanting it more.
The patience rule
A phone that sits switched off for two days and then boots cleanly is a much better outcome than one that boots after ten minutes and dies in three weeks. If you need a working phone now, put your SIM in an old handset rather than rushing the drying.
What IP68 and the liquid alerts actually tell you
Modern flagship phones carry IP67 or IP68 ratings, and people read those as waterproof. They are not. The rating comes from a controlled lab test: still, fresh water, a fixed depth, a fixed time, a factory fresh device, no soap, no salt, no pressure from movement.
Your phone is not that device any more. Every drop flexes the chassis slightly, adhesive ages, gaskets take a set, a screen or battery replacement rarely restores the original seal, and heat cycles dry out the bonding. Treat the IP rating as a safety margin that shrinks every year, not as a licence to swim with your phone. It is also worth knowing that essentially no manufacturer warranty covers liquid damage, whatever the rating printed on the box.
The alert in the charging port
If you have an iPhone, you may see a "Liquid detected in Lightning connector" or USB-C equivalent warning. Android phones from Samsung and others show a similar moisture warning and refuse to charge. People assume these mean the phone is damaged inside. They do not.
These alerts come from sensing across the pins in the charging port itself. They tell you one thing: there is enough conductivity in the port right now that charging would be risky. That is useful information and you should obey it. It says nothing about the mainboard, the speakers or the camera. Equally, no alert does not prove the inside is dry, because the sensor only sees the port.
The dot inside the SIM tray
The physical liquid contact indicator is a different thing. On most phones it is a small white or silver dot inside the SIM tray slot that turns pink or red permanently once wet. Shine a light in there and look. A tripped indicator is what a service centre checks first, and it is how a liquid damage claim gets declined, so knowing its state before you walk in saves you a conversation.
Clearing the speaker and ports with sound
Water sitting in a speaker cavity damps the diaphragm, which is why wet phones sound like they are underwater even after the outside is dry. Once the phone is dry enough to power on safely, low frequency tones are the standard way to shift that trapped water, and they are also what the built-in eject features on smartwatches use.
Hold the phone with the speaker pointing at the floor, set media volume to full, and run a water eject cycle on the free speaker cleaner. Wipe the beads that appear on the grille, wait a few minutes, then run it again. There are device specific versions for iPhone speakers and Samsung speakers, plus a dedicated earpiece mode if callers sound distant while music is fine. Corrosion is the real long term enemy
Here is the part people learn the hard way. Most water damaged phones do not die on the day they get wet. They die two weeks, two months or six months later, when corrosion that started on day one finally breaks a connection.
Residue plus humidity plus voltage is a slow electrochemical process. Symptoms arrive gradually: a microphone that stops working on calls, a camera that will not focus, worsening battery drain, Wi-Fi that drops, a charging port that only works at one angle. If any of those appear after a soaking, mention the water when you take it in. A technician who knows to look for corrosion finds it far faster than one hunting a mystery fault.
When to skip the DIY and go straight to a professional
Drying at home is the right call for a splash or a brief drop in clean water. These situations are not that, and waiting makes them worse:
- Salt water, chlorinated water, or a sugary or alcoholic drink. Residue needs to be cleaned off, not dried on. Same day service is ideal.
- It was powered on and running when it went in. Live circuits in water usually means some damage has already happened.
- The screen is behaving oddly. Ghost touches, dark patches, coloured blotches or lines mean liquid is already under the display.
- It will not charge after a full drying cycle, or the moisture warning keeps appearing on a port that looks and feels dry.
- It gets hot, smells odd, or the battery swells. Stop, do not charge, and get it looked at immediately.
- It was fully submerged for more than a few seconds, especially at any depth.
Ask specifically whether the shop does ultrasonic board cleaning. Rinsing and cleaning a board removes residue that no amount of drying will touch, and it is the difference between a repair and a delay.
What to do first when it boots, and the one rule to remember
Back up your data. Not later, immediately. A phone that survives a soaking is on borrowed time until you know corrosion has not taken hold, and the photos are worth more than the handset. Get a full cloud or computer backup running before you test the camera, before you check the speakers, before anything else.
