iPhone 12 speaker cleaner for flat edges and magnets
The iPhone 12 redesign brought back sharp flat sides and added a ring of magnets to the back. Both are great for accessories and slightly unhelpful for speaker grilles. Run a tuned 172 Hz cycle and clear it out.
Why the iPhone 12 design collects more debris
The iPhone 12 was the first Apple phone in years with genuinely flat sides, and the first with MagSafe magnets built into the back. Both changes are why this page exists as its own tool instead of a copy of the generic one.
The magnet ring is a dust collector
The MagSafe array holds a charger in place, and it holds anything else magnetic just as happily: iron filings from a workshop, grit off a car dashboard, the metal dust in a bag full of keys and coins. Once that is stuck to the phone it travels with the phone, and a pocket shuffles it towards the bottom rail where the speaker lives.
Flat edges hold lint in a line
A curved iPhone 11 edge lets fluff slide off. The iPhone 12 edge meets the back panel at a crisp corner, and a case fitted over it forms a narrow channel running the length of the speaker slot. Lint packs in and stays, which is why the grille on a 12 often looks grey under a bright light.
Ceramic Shield does not help here
The toughened front cover Apple introduced on the 12 line protects the display glass. It has nothing to do with the grille, the mesh behind it or water resistance, so a pristine screen tells you nothing about the bottom edge.
What is usually in an iPhone 12 grille
Different debris responds to different tones, so start with the one that matches your phone's history.
Metal dust
Fine ferrous grit drawn in by MagSafe. Dry, heavy and best shifted with the higher Dust Shake buzz plus a brush.
Pocket lint
Denim and jumper fibres compacted along the flat bottom rail by the case. Needs repeat cycles, not one long one.
Water
Rain, sweat or a sink dunk. The 12 line is rated IP68 to six metres for thirty minutes, so the phone is fine, the sound is not.

Case off, rail checked
Look inside the bottom rail of the case. Grey felt in there goes in the bin, not back on the phone.
Wipe the magnet ring
A dry cloth over the MagSafe circle removes ferrous dust before it migrates.
Volume to 100%
Full media volume, silent switch off. Quiet tones move nothing.
Grille facing down
Bottom edge, right of the Lightning port, pointing at a towel.
Run Dust Shake
Or Water Eject if there was liquid. One complete cycle, tapping the back gently.
Brush, then repeat
Stroke along the slot with a soft dry brush, then run cycle two.
The 12 mini hears blockage first
All four 2020 models share the same speaker layout, one driver on the bottom edge and the earpiece acting as the second stereo channel. What differs is the volume of air behind the driver. The 5.4 inch 12 mini has the smallest chamber Apple has shipped in a flagship iPhone, and a small chamber has less headroom to spare, so the same amount of lint is more audible on a mini than on a Pro Max.

On a mini it is worth running the sweep slider down towards 110 Hz for a pass. The driver cannot reproduce much down there, but the excursion is at its widest, which is exactly what unsticks a packed mesh. If you want the longer, harder version of that idea, use the deep speaker cleaner.

iPhone 12 speaker questions
Will a loud cleaning tone affect the MagSafe magnets?
No. Magnets are not moved by sound, and the tone is nowhere near strong enough to affect them. The cycle only makes the speaker diaphragm move, exactly as music does.
Can MagSafe metal dust actually reach the speaker?
The magnets sit on the back, not the bottom edge, so nothing is pulled straight into the grille. What happens is simpler: ferrous grit sticks to the phone, then pocket movement works it along the flat edges into the speaker slot.
Is the iPhone 12 waterproof?
It is water resistant, rated IP68 and tested to six metres for thirty minutes when new. Apple says that resistance decreases with wear, and liquid damage is not covered by warranty.
My 12 mini sounds thin and quiet. Is the speaker failing?
Often not. The mini has the smallest speaker chamber in the line, so a partly blocked grille shows up as thinness sooner than on bigger models. Run three cycles before assuming hardware.
Should I clean the case as well as the phone?
Yes, and most people skip it. The bottom rail of a year old case holds a felt of compacted lint sitting directly over the speaker. Wash a silicone case, wipe a hard one, then refit.
Which mode should I start with?
Dust Shake if the sound faded gradually, Water Eject if it changed suddenly after contact with liquid. Deep Sweep is the follow up when those leave it only slightly better.
Can I use compressed air on the grille?
Not at point blank range. Held close, the pressure pushes debris through the mesh into the cavity, where no amount of vibration brings it back out.
How often should I run this?
Once a month is plenty for a pocketed phone, plus after any rain, gym session or beach trip. Short regular cycles stop lint compacting into the mesh at all.
