How to test an ear speaker without hurting your ear

Never hold a loud tone against your ear

The receiver is designed to sit millimetres from your eardrum at conversation level. A steady test tone at full volume in that position is genuinely risky, and no diagnostic is worth tinnitus. Every test on this page either starts quiet or keeps the phone at arm's length.

There is also a technical limit worth being upfront about. A web page cannot choose which speaker your phone uses: the browser hands audio to the system, and the system sends it to the loudspeaker. The tone on this page is not playing through your earpiece, and no browser tool can make it.

That splits the job in two. Use the call path to listen to the earpiece, and use the tone to shake the phone itself.

  • Voicemail, speaker off: the easiest earpiece only playback on both iOS and Android.
  • Audio message raised to your ear: lifting the phone to your head plays the clip through the receiver.
  • A real call: the definitive test, since it uses the same path and the same volume control.

Two audio paths

Why calls sound bad while music sounds fine

Call audio and media audio barely share anything beyond the hardware. They use different speakers by default, different volume sliders, different processing and, in the case of calls, a compressed voice channel supplied by your network. That is why a phone can play a film perfectly and still make every caller sound like they are shouting through a duvet.

  • Different speaker: calls use the receiver, media prefers the loudspeaker or the stereo pair.
  • Different volume: in call volume is stored separately and can only be changed during a call.
  • Different bandwidth: voice channels are narrow, so there is less detail to lose before speech turns mushy.
  • Different processing: noise suppression and equaliser settings for media do not apply to a call.

Before blaming the receiver, raise the volume while a call is actually connected, and try one call on speakerphone. If speakerphone is clear and the handset is not, the earpiece or its mesh is the problem. If both are bad, suspect the network or the microphone instead, and read why speakers sound muffled only during calls.

Proximity sensor confusion

The sensor sits beside the earpiece. Grime or a thick protector over it leaves the screen awake against your cheek, so a stray tap mutes the call or flips it to speaker.

Wax, oil and make up

The mesh collects skin oil, sunscreen, foundation and ear wax, which set into a sticky film that dust binds to. The hardest blockage to shift, and it needs repeat short cycles.

In call volume

Turned down during one bad call and left there for months, because the slider only exists while a call is live. Always check it mid call rather than from the home screen.

When it really is the receiver module

Three signs together point at hardware: the earpiece is dead or crackling at every volume, speakerphone is perfect, and three cleaning cycles changed nothing. Add a recent drop or a soaking and it becomes very likely. On most phones the receiver sits in a small assembly beside the front camera and face recognition hardware, so it is a workshop job, and worth giving to a repairer who can keep that assembly intact.

What is the ear speaker on a phone?

Can I hold the test tone against my ear?

Browsers do not get to pick an output driver. Your phone routes web audio to the loudspeaker, and only the call system uses the receiver. That is why the listening tests here use real calls.

How do I clean ear wax out of an earpiece?

Dry methods only. A soft dry brush along the slit, a dry microfibre cloth, then short vibration cycles. No liquids, no alcohol, no pins, nothing pushed into the mesh.

Why does my screen stay on during calls?

That is the proximity sensor, not the speaker. Grime or a protector over the sensor stops it detecting your face, which leads to accidental mutes and calls flipped to speakerphone.

Callers say I sound muffled. Is that the earpiece too?

No, that is a microphone. The earpiece is what you hear, the mics are what they hear. Record a Voice Memo and play it back in headphones to judge your mics fairly.

How many cycles should I run on an earpiece?

Two or three short ones with a brush in between, spread over a day. Oily blockage releases in layers, so short repeated passes beat one long session.

Is a blocked earpiece worth repairing?

A blocked one is not a repair, it is a clean. A failed receiver module usually is worth fixing, since it is a small part and far cheaper than a phone.
