Your music is fine. Videos are fine. Speakerphone is fine. Then you hold the phone to your ear on a call and the other person sounds like they are talking through a duvet in the next room. It feels like a contradiction, so people assume it must be software.
It is not a contradiction. A held call does not use the speaker your music uses, does not use the same volume setting, and does not even use the same audio path through the phone. Once you know that, the problem narrows down fast, and in most cases it is a two minute fix on a part of the phone nobody ever cleans.
The thirty second test
Mid call, tap speakerphone. If the caller suddenly becomes clear, your earpiece is blocked and the rest of the phone is fine. If they still sound muffled on speaker, the problem is on their end or in the connection, and no amount of cleaning will help.
Calls and media are two different systems
Almost every phone has at least two speakers. The loudspeaker at the bottom edge handles music, videos, ringtones, alarms and speakerphone. The earpiece, properly called the receiver, sits behind a narrow slit at the top of the screen and handles the voice on a held call. On phones with stereo sound the earpiece doubles as the second channel for media, but at a fraction of the excursion it uses for speech.
They differ in more ways than position:
- Separate volume levels. In call volume is stored independently from media volume. You can only change it while a call is connected, which is why turning your music up never helps.
- A much finer mesh. The receiver opening is a slit maybe a millimetre tall, covered by a dust screen designed to keep debris off a very small driver.
- Direct contact with your face. Ear wax, skin oil, sunscreen and makeup transfer onto it every single call. Nothing touches the bottom speaker like that.
- A different audio pipeline. Voice runs through noise suppression, echo cancellation and a network codec. Media does not.
That last point matters for diagnosis, because it means a muffled call can come from four different places: the earpiece hardware, something covering it, a phone setting, or the line itself.
The leading cause: wax, oil and makeup in the mesh
In a repair shop this is the first thing we look at, and it is right most of the time. The earpiece slit spends its life pressed against the side of a head. Over months it accumulates a grey paste of ear wax, sebum, foundation, moisturiser and dust that dries into a film across the dust screen. The driver still works perfectly. Its output simply cannot get out.
You can usually confirm it by eye. Hold the phone under a bright light, angle the screen so the light rakes across the slit, and look along the length of it. A clean earpiece looks like a dark, even line. A blocked one looks grey, uneven, or slightly raised in places. If you can see the buildup, you have found the answer and you should stop troubleshooting software.
Nothing goes into the slit
The earpiece sits directly above the display and its flex cables. A pin, a needle or a SIM tool pushed into the slit can tear the dust screen or damage what is behind it, and alcohol or water wicked into that gap can reach the display connector. Dry cleaning only, worked along the outside of the slit, never into it.
Your hardware or their line?
Before you clean anything, spend one minute proving where the fault is. These four questions separate the two cases almost perfectly.
- Does it happen with every caller? If one person always sounds muffled and everybody else is clear, it is their phone or their signal, not yours.
- Does speakerphone fix it? Clear on speaker and muffled at the ear points straight at the earpiece. Muffled on both points at the line.
- Do recorded voicemail messages sound muffled too? Voicemail playback usually runs through the media path. Clear voicemail plus muffled live calls suggests the network or the codec, since the hardware just proved itself.
- Does Wi-Fi calling change it? Turn Wi-Fi calling on in one call and off in the next, on the same call with the same person. A clear difference is a network answer, not a hardware one.

That last row catches a lot of people. If the complaint is about how you sound, the earpiece is irrelevant: look at the bottom microphone pinhole and whether a case or a finger is covering it.
Screen protectors and the proximity sensor
If the muffling started within a week of fitting a screen protector, you almost certainly have your culprit. Protectors cause two separate problems around the earpiece.
First, the cutout. Many protectors are cut for a whole product family rather than one model, so the slot can sit a millimetre or two out of line, or be slightly too narrow. Even when the alignment is right, adhesive squeezed out during fitting can creep into the slit and dry there. The result is a caller who sounds distant while everything else is untouched.
Second, the sensor next to it. The proximity sensor sits within a few millimetres of the earpiece and tells the phone your face is close so it can blank the screen. A thick or tinted protector over that sensor can leave the screen live during a call, which is how you end up muting yourself with your cheek, and it can also make the phone behave as though the call is on speaker when it is not. If your screen stays on during calls, suspect the protector before anything else.
The test is crude but conclusive: peel one top corner of the protector back, make a call, and listen. If the caller is clear, replace the protector with one cut properly for your exact model.
Settings that only apply to calls
Several audio features exist purely on the voice path, so they can make calls sound wrong while media stays perfect.
- In call volume. Press volume up during a live call. If the phone was bumped in a pocket or a previous call was taken in a quiet room, the level may be sitting near the bottom.
- Voice Isolation and similar modes. Aggressive voice focus filters strip out background sound, and on a poor connection they can strip out parts of the voice too, which reads as muffled and thin. Switch the call audio mode back to standard or wide spectrum and compare. On Apple hardware, pair that check with a pass of the iPhone speaker cleaner.
- Noise cancellation and hearing aid compatibility. Both live in accessibility settings and both change the call tone noticeably.
- Bluetooth still connected. An earbud in a bag or a car system on the driveway can hold the call route while the earpiece plays a thin secondary version.
- A pending restart. Call routing bugs clear on a reboot more often than they should.
Network, codecs and HD voice
A muffled caller is very often nothing to do with your phone at all. Voice calls are compressed, and how much detail survives depends on the codec both ends negotiate.
A legacy narrowband call carries roughly the range of a landline, which is why some calls sound boxy and small no matter how clean your earpiece is. VoLTE and the HD voice codecs that ride on it carry a much wider range, so speech sounds closer and clearer. If VoLTE is switched off in your settings, if you are in an area that fell back to an older network, or if the person you are calling is on a network or handset that does not support HD voice, the call drops to the narrower codec and everything sounds duller. Both ends have to support it, which is why the same phone can sound crisp with one friend and flat with another.
Worth checking: that VoLTE or HD calling is enabled, that Wi-Fi calling is available where your signal is weak, and that you are not sitting at one bar of reception. Poor signal produces its own kind of muffling, usually with a warbling or underwater quality that comes and goes rather than a steady dullness.
How to clean the earpiece safely
Sound first, then dry tools, and nothing else. Work through this in order.
- Take the case off and wipe the top edge of the screen with a dry microfibre cloth.
- Set the volume to maximum and hold the phone with the earpiece slit facing the floor.
- Run a full cycle of the call speaker cleaner. The receiver is a small driver, so vibration is the gentlest thing that reaches inside it.
- Brush along the slit with a clean, dry, soft brush, moving side to side rather than pressing in. Wipe the bristles between passes so you are not putting the same film back.
- Press a strip of low tack tape over the slit and lift straight off to take away what the brush loosened.
- Run a second cycle, then check the result with the ear speaker test before you call anyone.
- Make a real call to someone who was previously hard to hear and compare.
For a slit that has been building up for a year or more, one pass will not do it. Repeat the cycle two or three times with a few minutes in between, or use the deep cleaner mode for a wider frequency sweep. Do the same for the bottom speaker while you are there, since the two usually get neglected together.
If nothing here works
Genuine receiver failure exists, but it sounds different from a blockage. A failed receiver crackles, buzzes, cuts out or goes completely silent. A blocked one is simply quiet and dull. Start with the speakerphone test
One tap during a live call tells you which half of the problem you own. Clear on speaker means a blocked earpiece, and a cleaning cycle plus a dry brush fixes most of those in a few minutes. Muffled on speaker means the voice was already muffled before it reached you, and the answer is VoLTE, reception or the other person's handset, not your speaker.
